Environmental and emissions data are reviewed against recognized verification standards. These standards set out the principles and methods a verifier uses to assess whether reported information is complete, accurate, and reliable. Different standards allow for different levels of assurance, which determines how detailed the verification process will be and how deeply the verifier reviews the data for errors, omissions, or misstatements.<\/p>

There are two commonly accepted levels of assurance: reasonable assurance and limited assurance. Reasonable assurance provides a high level of confidence that the emissions data is materially accurate and free from significant errors. Limited assurance provides a lower level of confidence and involves a more limited review of greenhouse gas data and supporting records. Under limited assurance, the verifier confirms that there is no evidence suggesting the emissions report contains material misstatements.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The primary verification standard applied by our verifiers is ISO 140064-3. This standard, developed by the International Organization for Standardization, is specifically designed for greenhouse gas inventories and supports reasonable assurance engagements. Other commonly used standards include those issued by the GHG Protocol, The Climate Registry, and the International Standards on Assurance Engagements (ISAE).<\/p>

Organizations select a verification standard based on their reporting objectives, regulatory requirements, stakeholder expectations, and the level of assurance they wish to achieve.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Governments, customers, and investors increasingly expect organizations to measure and lower their emissions. Achieving this begins with collecting accurate information on where emissions come from and what types are generated. Initiating a Net-Zero Emissions Strategy: A Case Study of an Electric Utility Company<\/strong><\/p>

Electricity is a key source of energy in Ghana, with consumption growing almost every year since the 1950s. With peak electricity consumption in Ghana measured at 4,000<\/u><\/a> MGW, and as the impacts of climate change become top of mind for many consumers, demand for renewable energy sources increases. In 2021, a Ghana-based thermal power generation company began its initial transition toward decarbonization by developing a net-zero plan. At the direction of its majority shareholders, the company engaged VoltaGreen Engineering to strengthen its greenhouse gas inventory and to assess its existing and planned emissions-reduction initiatives. VoltaGreen Engineering also supported the company in establishing a structured pathway to begin its net-zero transition.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Our Solution – Laying the foundations: GHG emissions inventory and support<\/b><\/strong><\/p>

Developing a greenhouse gas emissions inventory is a core requirement of an effective ESG program. Reliable and well-structured emissions data establishes a clear baseline, supports credible target setting, enables ongoing performance tracking, and informs the identification of emissions reduction opportunities. VoltaGreen Engineering supported the client in developing its first Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions inventory across all direct operations, including power generation. The systems developed were designed to be repeatable and efficient, allowing the client to update future inventories annually, support third-party assurance, and strengthen long-term ESG performance monitoring and strategy development.<\/p>

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global partnership that supports companies in setting credible emissions reduction targets aligned with climate science. It provides sector-specific guidance with defined criteria to help industries transition toward a low-carbon economy. For the power sector, SBTi guidance uses the Sectoral Decarbonization Approach and requires targets that address emissions from electricity generation under Scope 1, as well as emissions associated with electricity that are purchased and sold under Scope 3, Category 3. The guidance also allows for optional targets covering additional Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emission sources, where relevant.<\/p>

In line with these requirements, we worked closely with the client to assess its operations and address a central business challenge: delivering reliable and consistent power to customers while reducing emissions. Given that renewable energy sources such as solar and wind are inherently intermittent, the analysis focused on how existing renewable assets could be used most effectively, how those assets influenced the client\u2019s Scope 1 emissions profile, and how the resulting data could support informed net-zero planning and long-term decarbonization strategy.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
